Tony McDonald

"Imagery plays the dominant role in my work. Although you may infer
connotations from the images that stir a connection to other things,
and I may even feel a touch of synchronicity as the painting
develops itself, it is the image and the space that it occupies in
the world that is my focus.
Regardless if it is a leaf in a landscape, a carcass of hanging
color or a posed figure, the basics of line, color, shape and design
are really what the work is about.
The subconscious reaches for symbols from myth, faith and literature when
looking at paintings, especially contemporary and non-traditional
work, and tries to find a safe and comfortable connection. I think
that's ok, and even welcome as it shuttles the image and the work
into rooms in the mind that I did not know were there, but sometimes
fit better than the original idea of the work."
