Artist Statement Shoe Series 2008-2009
The shoes are an abbreviated version of the portrait, which here attempt to capture a human quality of personality and general attitude. Some are exhausted while some are energetic and others are intimate.
The shoe has been used throughout art history as a denotation of the human element because, like personalities, they are unique to the owner. The shoe is a powerful statement about mankind as it is an article of clothing that almost every society utilizes.
The intention of my shoe series is to create images that are loose and painterly; for me to take less control over the brush and the medium. Because shoes are uncomplicated, uncomplaining and fairly ambiguous, I was able to remove the mental stigma of making a great painting, which gave me the freedom to just paint.
